New iPhone 8 Leaks Exploit Apple's Next-Generation Technology

Although the iPhone 8’s arrival in-store may be up for debate, the expectation is that Apple’s flagship smartphone for 2017 will be announced alongside the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus in September. It’s certainly under development right now, and the latest leak shows how Apple can improve on the current iPhone package while using a tried and trusted slice of technology from Cupertino.
By bringing the smart connector - currently sitting along the edge of the iPad Pro machines - Tim Cook and his team will be able to point out another difference the iPhone 8 from the updates to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, as well as providing many more options for expansion.

No doubt the smart connector would be compatible with accessories for the various iPad Pro models, creating many more options for case and keyboard manufacturers (to name two popular areas). Over the lifetime of the product the increased user base should make for larger production runs and better economics for the peripheral manufacturers.
Because of the magnetic nature of the electrical contacts, the port may also be used for a more comfortable and user-friendly VR or AR service. There is a lot of talk about Apple using the flagship smartphone in 2017 to explore new virtual or augmented realities, There could be engineering in the smart connector that makes it more practical than a lightning cable connector - the speed of bi-directional data transfer being one potential area.
There’s also chatter that the smart connector will also allow wireless charging to be used. Given Apple’s recent hires in this space and its membership of the Wireless Power Consortium this rings true, although I would hope that it would be built into the smartphone and not be a snap-on proprietary adaptor.

The last few weeks has seen the expected specification list of the presumptively named iPhone 8 lose a number of key features. The addition of the smart connector will create a notable point of differentiation in the iPhone portfolio in September. Many will seen the new iPhone range as little more than bumps in specifications and chip speeds, which mean the smart connector will be a key area to promote a new development for the iPhone.
